Why boccia matters
1️⃣ It Creates True Competitive Opportunity for Athletes with Severe Disabilities Boccia is one of the only sports where athletes with very limited functional movement can compete at elite levels — including international competition. In Victoria, that means: Athletes who might otherwise have no competitive pathway can train and compete. Local players can connect to provincial and national systems through Boccia Canada. Disability sport is visible — not hidden. That visibility matters. 2️⃣ It Strengthens Victoria’s Disability Community Victoria has a strong network of disability advocacy and support services. Boccia adds: Athletic identity Community belonging Structured competition Leadership opportunities for athletes It shifts the narrative from care-based to performance-based. 3️⃣ It Promotes Accessibility Standards in Local Sport When a city supports boccia, it must provide: Accessible venues Trained officials Adaptive equipment Inclusive recreation policy That raises the bar for accessibility across all community programming. 4️⃣ It Builds Representation When local athletes compete, especially at provincial or national levels, it shows: Severe disability and high-level sport are not incompatible. Athletic excellence doesn’t depend on traditional physical strength. Inclusion is real, not symbolic. 5️⃣ It Creates Pathways Beyond Recreation For some athletes, boccia becomes: Provincial competition National development programs Paralympic ambition That’s not recreation — that’s sport.
